We took a nice long break to get a chance to chat with everyone then launched into set two.
BAGPIPE PLAYER IN LAKESIDE OHIO FREE
The first set went really well despite some memory lapses and a lot of our regulars from First Friday with Free Beer were in attendance. But who cares man, it was Free Beer night at long last. Thanks to the Farmington Founders Festival, we had a great crowd to watch us set up! Dinner was a bit of a gamble as the labor crisis raised it's ugly head as the reduced waitstaff and kitchen crew, featuring mostly Cowley's family members came to the rescue. Every time we think this Free Beer thing has run it's course, a great audience like Cowley's on Saturday July 17th reminds us how much fun this really is. Sure enough, as the gig gets closer, unvaccinated people are creating a spike of their own! Since we host a bit of an (ahem) older crowd, most everyone we know is vaccinated so it went pretty well. When we booked this gig, we thought the pandemic was over.

we even stayed most of Sunday to take advantage of the unseasonably cold weather!! We made it through the show, made it up as we went along and had a great time.
BAGPIPE PLAYER IN LAKESIDE OHIO FULL
Saturday featured the usual silliness with a tent full of fans and 5 guys who clearly had not practice enough due to COVID. THEN Free Beer plays a set in the sands on the shore of Lake Huron! What a hoot!! Even if you didn't have a reservation at the resort, you were welcome to crash the tent on Saturday night and help us celebrate nothing!! This year, Bobby White brought his guitar and Scott, Kurt and Bobby did a fireside acoustic jam on Friday night. We drive in Friday night, have a campfire, get up and have fund in Lake Huron Saturday morning, then cook way too much food and feast. Every Year, Free Beer takes a vacation to the Mai Tiki resort just south of Oscoda. Jim ended up feeling better and stopping by the gig long enough to play guitar for the three songs that Johnny didn't know.įree Beer headed north the weekend of Saturday, September 18. Luckily, we know Johnny Allen from the Love Junkies who knows almost every song ever written and was willing to sit in for Jim this night. He didn't have the Rona, but was still not in shape to set up the PA and play guitar all night long. this year got a little weird when Jim announced two days before the gig on October 29th at the Northville Eagles hall that he might have the flu and was going to get tested for COVID. We did one at the Northville Eagles Hall in 20 with all the fixings.a few scary songs, a costume contest, 50/50. Why have a hall party when you can have a Hall O Ween Party? Free Beer has a history of doing Hall-O-Ween parties. But Kurt got better and was ready to rock when the lights went on.Ĥ85 10/29/21 Hall-O-Ween - Northville Eagles Kurt threw a scare into as he was not feeling well, and this time Johnny Allen was NOT available. All of our friends showed up, we drank, rocked and had a great time. Instead of the Library Pub in Novi, the site was the Northville Eagles hall, who booked our "Package Deal" of Halloween and Thanksgiving eves. A little different this year with the threat of a Pandemic looming, but results were still the same. You open the doors and everyone looking for a way to get away from their family and have some drinks with their friends just shows up. It's as close to a "gimme putt" as there is in the bar band business. Every year Free Beer would play the night before Thanksgiving. 486 11/24/21 Thanksgiving Eve - Northville Eaglesįree Beer rivives "Amateur Night" Tradition at Northville Eagles. HERE IS A LIST OF EVERY GIG WE HAVE EVER PLAYED We have not and will not outline exactly what those are. Click HERE to find out more about the many versions of Free Beer!!!įree Beer officially retired on January 27th 2017, but we will occasionally play out if a certain set of conditions and criteria are met. We are on drummer #6 and bass player #5, but otherwise Kurt, Jim and Scott remain as "original equipment". There have been a number of incarnations of the band. So we started practicing in Kevin's basement in Royal Oak until we had our first gig. We all got up and didn't completely suck. This idea was cemented at Jim's Bachelor party where he had set up instruments so anyone could jam. Sure enough, we were not a bowling team, we were a band. We all turned to Paul, the IT master at 89X. Jim says "I play Guitar", Scott says "I played Keyboards in a band in High School", Kevin Yonker (Drummer #1) announced "I Play The Drums". There was Karaoke at the bar and we noticed that Kurt was a pretty good singer.

So one night after bowling the 5 members of the team gathered as we usually did and sat at the bowling alley bar bemoaning the fact we had just wasted another 12 bucks a piece. Free Beer began from the ashes of the 89X bowling Team.
